Kalliope Disc Musical Box

This is a small disc musical box. The case is in soft wood with a walnut stain.

The top is inscribed with a design of a recorder and leaves with a sqauare border. The inscribed areas are painted in gold paint.

This box was manufactured by the KalliopeMusikwerke in Leipzig, Germany between 1895 and 1919.

Here is the bedplate and comb assembly. There are 36 teeth in the comb. This mechanism plays a 7 inch diameter disc.

The start/stop lever is visible at the left rear of the bedplate. The two L-shaped pieces of steel on either side of the bedplate have rollers that slightly bend the steel dsisc to present the disc over the starwheels correctly.

The spring motor is wound by the disc spindle that is notched to accept the winding handle containing a cross-pin.

This side view of the mechanism removed from the box shows the alignment of the starwheels and the rollers on the pressure bar.

The set screw at the left of the comb is used to align the disc with the starwheels for accurate play.
