8-Air Swiss Cylinder Musical Box by Ami Rivenc playing Sacred Music
and Hymns.
This cylinder music box has a 10-3/4" cylinder and a 77-tooth comb, serial number 38837. It plays
eight hymn tunes as shown on tune sheet. However, the first tune
listed is not the tune that is pinned on the cylinder, rather it is
"Jesus, King of Glory" by Haydn for which words were written
by Davidson (1887). The latest tune is "March of
the Israelites" by Costa (1885) which, along with the tune sheet
with the Swiss Made stamp, makes the manufacture of this music box likely
about 1891. The tune sheet is a typical Rivenc tune sheet,
similar to No. 45 in H.A.V. Bulleid's "Tune Sheet" book.
The restored music mechanism is housed a grain painted case with a
floral inlaid lid and string banding inlays on top, front and sides.
