Silvanigra Disc Musical Box

This is a Silvanigra No. 1 disc musical box.

It was made for the Junghans'sche Uhrenfabrik of Württemberg for sale to the German market around the turn of the century.

The movement is lever wound. The spring motor winds by moving the lever (seen at the bottom right) from right to left. The lever is returned to the right to continue winding.

With the lid open, we can see the musical movement.

The inside of the lid contains a nice color lithographic print, typical of the period.

This musical box plays a 4-1/2" (11.5 cm) diameter disc. A disc is also shown.

This disc is the same size as several other brands made at that time, including Symphonion, Helvetia and Thorens (see previous exhibit).

Most of those were 'edge-driven' using tooth-eged discs. This mechanism, however, uses a center-drive, the disc being turned by means of a vertical peg on the center spindle that fits through a hole near the center of the disc.

The music is played on a 30-note comb. The disc is held in place with a flat steel pressure bar, seen to the left of the comb.

The speed of the music can be changed by adjusting a speed regulator dial, seen in the upper left.
