Fortuna 'Marvel'
Disc Musical Box

This wonderful disc musical box was manufactured in 1900 by the Adler Musikwerke Gohlis in Leipzig, Germany. It plays a 26-1/2" diameter disc.

The walnut box has beautiful fretted doors backed with cloth and has columnar trim and carved decorations.

The winding handle for the large spring motor is seen on the right side of the case.

With the doors open, you can see a disc in the playing position. The tune name is printed in cyrillic letters on the disc. It was made for the Russian market and is the popular tune of the day, "God Save The Czar".

The red cloth backing of the fretwork doors can be seen here.

In addition to playing music on two steel combs, it plays accompaniment on a 14 note reed organ, a drum and a triangle!

It is a coin-operated machine and you can see the coin drop chute on the right side in the picture.

The large spring motor and the bellows for the reed organ are located under the wooden cover below the combs.

The coin drawer is at the bottom.

In this close-up photo to your right, you can more clearly see the instrumentation.

There are two opposing combs, each containing 60 teeth.

Directly underneath the combs are five arms for the drum beaters.

Below those are the 14 reed organ pallets, seven on each side.

The triangle is just visible on the left.
