Symphonion Eroica Clock

This wonderful tall clock has a hidden treasure behind its door. This is an 'Eroica' clock, Model 38B, manufactured by the Symphonion Musikwerke of Leipzig, Germany.

Symphonion was the first commercial manufacturer of disc musical boxes. They made musical boxes that played discs that ranged in size from 4-1/2" (11.5 cm) to 30" (76 cm). The case styles of the musical boxes varied greatly. These included table models, upright models, clocks, and advertising pieces. Some were manivelles, but most were spring motor-driven machines. Some included bells, some glockenspiel. They also made automatic disc changers, as did several other manufacturers.

The case of this clock stands 8-1/2 feet (270 cm) tall and has a Lenzkirch clock in the top section. The wood is walnut and typical of German design, it has many carved adornments and turned finials.

The hinged door below contains a glass panel with beautiful painting on the inside of the glass.

Inside the door is the musical mechanism. It consists of three double-comb movements, each one having the combs in the sublime harmonie configuration.

Each comb has 50 teeth, making a total of 300 tuned teeth that help to make lots of music.

The discs are 14" (35.5 cm) in diameter and are made in matched sets marked 'A', 'B' and 'C'. Each disc has a slightly different portion of the musical arrangement.

The triple-disc six-comb configuration in this musical mechanism provides exceptionally brilliant musical arrangements.
